A Londoner from Afar Goes to Munich2
For a mountain lover, my trip to Munich was rather refreshing. I did quite a bit of walking in the city itself and near River Isar. But, being so close to the Alps, I had to get out there too!
As I had little time, I decided to do a walking route around one of the lakes South of Munich. Tegernsee is a natural glacial lake, which is a big holiday destination in Germany. The mix between nature and picturesque little places is well worth a visit.
I reckon that this route is quite suitable for people used to walking in the London or Britain area. The reason is that it is quite flat as compared to other areas there and very similar to what we get here. Certain areas in the Brecon Beacons can be quite hilly and harder in comparison, though. I did around 15 km before it started to rain.
I set off at Tegernsee, in the middle of the lake, to get a boat from Bad Wiessee across the lake up to Gmund at the top of the lake and back to Tegernsee. I couldn´t quite convey the beauty of the scenery with the pics below, but hope you like them!
Now, a beach? No! I had lunch sitting on a bench in front of this scene. It was quite sunny and very warm for most of the day. I think there are some proper bathing areas around the lake.
Munich area is the richest part of Germany. I could tell not only by the number of rich houses and clinics I came across, but also boutiques and art galleries! A bit of black history, many Nazis had houses in this area back in the day.
Saint Ignatius Church sticks out from quite a distance. It is a Catholic church, and it surprised me to learn that most of the population in Germany is actually Catholic.
Note the paintings in the wall, the same technique that I could see in so many types of buildings. For example, in the Holy Spirit Church near Viktualien market in Munich and in other buildings in this area, such as this one:
Despite the rich houses, clinics and hotels in the area, there were a few farms too. The picture above was taken near one of them.
I took the boat back near this big lovely park which reminded me of some of the parks that we have in London. Look at the chair – similar to those on the beach?
A view from the boat:
The weather was amazing during most of the day. It actually reminded me of the weather here, because it was sunny and warm first. Then, cloudy and windy, then sunny and warm, and finally – the heavens opened! Nevermind, people still sat outside the local pub next to the lake shore to have a beer!
Thanks for reading!
What a great trip! And your photos are so nice …you really made me want to to to that part of Germany.
That´s great. Job done, then! xDD
You sure got a lot in for such a short period of time. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
I did. I only had a bit of time to spend there. 🙂
It looks like you enjoyed it! 😉 Thanks for sharing
You´re welcome. 🙂
Sounds like a good trip. Every time I’ve gone to Munich, I never take the time to sightsee, but perhaps I should (judging by the interesting areas it has).
