Vlogging Is the Word
Vlogging is the new buzzword in digital media. I have not misspelled the word, although it does look like it is all wrong! As it is the latest craze in digital communications, I thought I should spend a bit of time looking into this. You can find some cool videos at the bottom of this entry.
It is quite like good, old blogging. The main difference is that someone needs to appear on camera telling their audience a story in a series of videos, as opposed to writing about that. Then, vloggers upload their videos onto online channels on various platforms like YouTube, much like the usual blogging platforms. People can then subscribe to their channel to follow the content uploaded or, simply, watch the videos.
I guess that immediacy is one of the greatest advantages of video – if internet access is good enough at that moment, that is. So, it must be appealing to do a video to discuss a topic or tell a story one feels is going to reach people quickly – and which is cool to do. I have found a variety of topics discussed, from people’s experiences and opininions on particular subjects to travel or cooking.
I only wonder about the lack of thought and script that I have seen in many of the videos I’ve watched. Maybe, it is that video allows for random thoughts to be expressed in an understandable manner. So, people feel there is no need to use a different approach.
All in all, I reckon vlogging is a great use of video, and it is also great that ordinary people are able to communicate this way. Vlogs can definitely be more entertaining than TV. Technology is, partly, to blame for this easy creation and access to content. Unfortunately, one of the results is more information overload. I am curious as to see where all will take us!
I prefer blogging, because I find it easier to communicate. Maybe others find it easier to vlog. Still, I reckon it all depends on:
- What one is trying to achieve;
- Access to both quality filming and post-production technology (which I am becoming familiar with);
- Loads of time in your hands!
I have been unable to find `corporate´ style, personal vlogs out there. But, I am enjoying the research process no end! I have found some vlogs and short videos that you might like.
Feel free to add some to the list! Happy watching.
