Text Me, Like Me, Share Me! Please?
I have often wondered how far is too far when it comes to the use of social media and the internet. I cannot think of a day in the last 10+ years that I haven’t texted/ whatsapped someone or checked and shared media info in the usual publications and social media tools like YouTube.
For many, it has actually become a habit to communicate with other people this way. This is partly because some other people communicate with me using these tools, partly due to my chosen line of work. I am also an avid technology consumer. Likes, follows and shares play a big role in this scenario.
There are two sides of it, ie, the useful and the not-so-useful sides. They are really useful to everyone involved in social media personally and professionally. Influence is a huge factor to take into account in business, as the info that those little icons and the text messages provide us with help to make the right decisions. This is also true of personal branding.
The dark side of things is the need of pursuing ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ and of checking avidly all the stats. Many people feel like this these days. The need is so great that there is a big chance that we forget we are communicating with real human beings who might not care about whatever it is that we are saying.
This might be the real reason behind a court ruling that says that pressing the Facebook ‘like’ button is not freedom of speech
Another drawback is information overload. I sometimes get the same articles several times from different sources, which on the other hand, I think it is fine. I’d rather get them three times than none! Plus I can use that info for other purposes.
Texting has a distinct disadvantage. We need to be in the appropriate place to do that. Some drivers choose to speak and text on their mobile phones while driving. It has become a real problem. Check below what the Belgian Government has decided to do in this fun video below.
No share or id values provided for youtube shortcode.Like or share this article if you think it’s interesting and worthy – or not. I’ll leave it to you.
Technology can be fun. Use it safely!
Great! I wish they do this in the US. So, if they can’t pass the test they need to sign a contract “I AM NOT GOING TO TEXT WHILE DRIVING, EVER.”…
They would spend a lot less money on advertisement to inform people about the dangers of not focusing on the driving. Thanks for your comment!
I am not a big fan of Facebook just because people like to post status updates of every little thing happening in their lives and it seems pointless to me. Easy to press the “Like” button on something pointless I suppose.
I know. Many of us feel the same from a personal point of view.
