Picture Wednesday – Video Killed the Radio Star
Some decades ago, someone wrote a song called Video Killed the Radio Star and Queen wrote Radio Ga Ga, which seems to support that channel. What if we had a combination of radio and images? Can creative tech gadgets be useful too?
See below what I mean.
The robot is called Bakelite Robot, by Nam Jum Paik 2002. It is a big sculpture built using nine vintage bakelite radios, which the artist has customised to incorporate specially compiled video footage. It’s a bit like going back in time when you look at it, isn’t it?
The small one is called videosphere, and it is a TV set shaped in the form of a space helmet. Very 1970’s, in fact, it was introduced in early 1970’s and sold until early 1980’s. It was just another object of consumerism, creative but certainly not necessary to have. Still cool, hey? So cool that we can even see in the film The Matrix.
I found it on the Geffrye Museum of the home in London. The robot was part on an exhibition at the Tate Modern. The pictures are mine and took them using my Nexus 4.
Thanks for reading!
