Picture Wednesday – Ponte City
Some designs and artworks can catch your eye instantly, sometimes because we may think they represent something we can recognise. But, something doesn’t quite fit, and it turns out to be something else. This is what I felt when I saw the picture below.
At first sight, they look like the negatives you get when developing pictures. Guess what they might actually be? They have a similar size, although of course they are coloured pictures. But, those little images were taken on each of the apartments in Ponte City, a 54-floor building in Johannesburg, South Africa. It’s part of Ponte City, Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse’s art project which is being exhibited at The Photographer’s Gallery in London until 7th June 2015.
What is so important about this building? Read on.
Ponte City was built in 1976 as a symbol of white supremacy in Jo’burg. Then, it became a drug haven. The artists have also published booklets containing personal stories to complete the social portrait that they have tried to create. Great piece of storytelling.
Thanks for checking my picture Wednesday post today!
